Affordable Electric Cars
It is 2023 and we are in the midst of the electric car revolution, with more and more models being introduced to the market. EVs are much improved now and offer some unique features, zero-emissions motoring, and an excellent price-per-mile ratio.
1. Mini Cooper SE
The Mini Cooper SE is the most affordable fully electric vehicle you can buy, and it is priced at $29,900 MSRP. Still, if you qualify for the federal tax credit, the price of this compact city cruiser can be lowered to a very tempting $23,000. The Cooper SE has a 32.6 kWh battery pack, a single electric motor, and delivers 181 hp to the front wheels. This translates to a decent 0 to 60 mph time of 7.3 seconds and 140 to 145 miles of range.
2. Nissan Leaf
Leaf is a well-known electric vehicle that happens to be the best-selling model of its kind in the world. For 2022, Nissan slightly upgraded the second-generation Leaf with a 62-kWh battery and 215 hp electric motor. There are two models available, the standard Leaf with 150 miles of range for $31, 600 and Leaf Plus with a bigger battery and 226 miles of range. The Leaf Plus starts at $38,200 MSRP.
3. Hyundai Ioniq Electric
One of the best electric vehicles you can get is Hyundai's Ioniq which has been present on the market for several years. Improved continuously, Ioniq Electric is now powered by a 134 hp electric motor with a 38.3 kWh battery pack which results in a decent, 170-mile range. Starting at $33,050, Ioniq Electric comes decently equipped and has plenty of interior room, which provides the drivers with an enjoyable driving experience.
4. Chevrolet Bolt
If you are looking for an electric commuter car that will be driven mostly in an urban environment, then the Chevrolet Bolt is the one for you. Even though it is not the most spacious or the most affordable (prices start at $36 620), Bolt has lots of qualities that will make you consider it. First, it is surprisingly quick with 0 to 60 mph time of just 6.5 seconds, and second, with an optional fast-charging system, you can add up to 100 miles of range in only 30 minutes. When it's fully charged, it can travel up to 259 miles (EPA ratings) which is more than enough for city driving.
5. Hyundai Kona Electric
For people who are in the market for a compact electric crossover, Hyundai prepared Kona Electric which shares most of its drive train with Ioniq Electric. However, Kona Electric is a bit more capable than Ioniq since it has a more powerful electric motor with 150 hp and up to 258 miles of range. It has better interior appointments, upscale features, a bigger central display, and so on. As expected, it costs more than the Ioniq, but we feel that it is worth the investment. At the moment, Kona EV can be yours for $37,900 MSRP.

6. Kia Niro EV
It is a shame that Kia Nero EV is not offered in all states since it is a very competent all-electric SUV with lots of room, excellent features, and great driving dynamics. It resembles the Tesla Model 3 but in a slightly more conventional package and with better-built quality. Powered by a 201 hp electric motor with a 64 kWh battery pack, Nero EV can travel up to 239 miles on a single charge. With advanced safety equipment and a comfortable interior, the $39,090 asking price sounds more than reasonable.
7. BMW i3
In the fossil fuel world, BMW is synonymous with powerful engines, sporty driving dynamics, and coupe bodies. However, this BMW is breaking that mold. The i3 is a small, sub-compact model with strange styling, electric motor, not a lot of interior space but a high price. The 2022 i3 costs $44,450, which is pretty steep for a vehicle that only gets 153 miles of range. Although the built quality and materials are exceptional, the cabin is tiny, and driving dynamics are far below the rest of the EV segment.
